Is fitness fashion fuelling a liposuction increase?

A recent audit from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons revealed a 12% increase in  liposuction procedures compared to the year before in the UK. In general, the level of cosmetic surgery procedures taking place every year has stayed relatively consistent in the last few years. Indeed this recent audit confirmed  just a small increase of 0.1% for all cosmetic surgical procedures.

There was also a decline in the number of facelift procedures which may be attributed to the rise in non-surgical aesthetic treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers which can also  help to combat the signs of ageing and create a more youthful appearance.

The recent significant growth in the number of liposuction procedures also correlates with a growing gym and fitness trend. So, is it fitness fashion or fitness itself which is increasing the popularity of liposuction?

The growing fitness trend

In the last few years, the health, gym and fitness industry has been booming. In the UK alone, the industry is worth around £5 billion, with the total number of gym members sitting at approximately 10 million, with one in every seven people in the UK being a member of a gym. Again, from 2017 to 2018, the fitness industry has grown, with a 2.9% increase in market value and a 2% increase in the number of members.

With the growing industry, there is a substantial growth in health and fitness awareness. More and more people are seeing fitness as a key part of their lives. Many use fitness to counteract the stress of daily life; others are understanding the importance of fitness for overall health and cardiovascular levels. The awareness has also grown with a crucial link between fitness and mental health, with exercise being particularly beneficial for reducing stress and alleviating the symptoms of anxiety and depression and other diseases.

As well as growing health awareness, fitness industry growth can be linked to the rise in gym culture, and with that, there is a considerable increase in fitness fashion or ‘athleisure’ clothing. So much so, that some plastic surgeons believe that the rise in the number of liposuction procedures is related to the increase in people wanting to look good in figure-hugging athleisure clothing.

Of course, the popular trend of sportswear and figure-hugging clothing can be a significant factor in wanting to improve their physique. However, the rise in the health and fitness industry as a whole is perhaps more prominent with more people looking to enhance their body shape and enjoy a healthy lifestyle where fitness plays a critical part. As such, confidence then increases, and the gym wear trend fits in naturally with this approach.

Maximising body aesthetics with liposuction

At Hans Place, we offer VASER liposuction. VASER liposuction uses enhanced technology, which can be both targeted and powerful for small areas and large areas of the body. Just like all of the treatments at Hans Place that we offer, VASER liposuction is a walk-in/walk-out procedure meaning there is no overnight stay required. It works by using effective ultrasound technology that selectively removes stubborn fat to help reshape areas of the body.

While VASER liposuction can help to remove stubborn areas of fat and can help to create a refined, sleeker silhouette, we recommend the treatment alongside a healthy lifestyle. Typically, our clients are those who are eating a healthy diet and participating in an active lifestyle with exercise but are not achieving their desired results. We also have clients that are looking to kickstart their healthy lifestyle with the confidence and care that VASER liposuction can provide.

Liposuction should not be considered a substitute for healthy living, but to work alongside a healthy lifestyle to create a more refined silhouette and perhaps remove the stubborn areas of fat where it is hard to see results with through diet and exercise alone, such as around the thighs, buttocks, upper arms and abdomen.

We believe that the increase in the number of liposuction treatments is due to a rise in health-conscious individuals who are looking to enhance and maximise their body aesthetics by combining healthy living, diet and exercise with aesthetic medicine as a way to achieve their desired results. The trend of athleisure fitted clothing is certainly a contributing factor, but for my clients, it is the focus on healthy living, which is undoubtedly the driving factor.

Just like all cosmetic surgery, the best results for liposuction are when treatment is combined with healthy lifestyle factors.

Enhancing an athletic appearance

With the increase in health-conscious individuals, We also offer treatments called VASER Hi-Def and Mid-Def. As the first doctor trained in the UK to provide this treatment technique, Dr Mike Comins offers highly experienced expert care in helping individuals to achieve an improved muscular appearance with the look of an enhanced muscle tone.

The treatments work as liposuction to sculpt around the existing muscles to give an enhanced athletic look. This is particularly popular for those looking to achieve more defined abdominal muscles, such as a six-pack or enhancing pectorals. This type of treatment can work really well for those already adopting a healthy lifestyle, where fitness is a focus. It can help to give the appearance of a more toned, athletic and muscular appearance.

As a result, VASER Hi-Def and Mid-Def can both help to improve an enhanced aesthetic appearance as well as developing confidence and self-esteem which may, in turn, help people to feel more confident in the popular athleisure figure-hugging clothing trend.

Just as liposuction works best with a healthy lifestyle, the VASER Hi-Def and Mid-Def technique do not sculpt muscles out of fat but work with the existing musculature to give a more defined, enhanced appearance. This focus on precise contouring can help to improve the patient’s natural body type and frame.

While the athleisure clothing trend may be making more people consider their appearance, the emphasis is undoubtedly on achieving a healthy lifestyle and then using liposuction as a supporting tool to help remove stubborn areas of fat and achieve a more toned appearance.
